Editor's Desk

December has finally arrived! Now is the time to enjoy the spirit of the season, snuggle up by the fire or in the barn, and spend time with friends and family — equine members included!

Along with December comes the mad rush to find last minute gifts. Make finding gifts for the horse lover or special horse a little bit easier with our Deck the Stalls! Holiday Gift Guide (page 24), which is filled with many wonderful last minute gifts and stocking stuffers.

The holiday season is also about celebrating! This November Farmfair International (page 8) celebrated cowboy culture by featuring events which demonstrated everyday life on the ranch. Cowboys from across the west came to compete and have a little fun at the same time.

Adjustments to your regular horse care routine may need to occur during the winter months. Our Winter Horse Care Tips (page 41) will help you keep your horse healthy and happy this winter.

This month’s Tough Questions (page 22) asks whether catastrophic injuries are due to horses being bred for performance at the expense of health and soundness. Also read the conclusions from last month’s question about whether horses kept in barns are psychologically compromised. Tough Questions is all about hearing what you think, so send us your thoughts!

This month, Will Clinging discusses the Evergreen Horse (page 42). Not about horses who like pine trees, Clinging explores reasons why a horse may not be progressing in training.

If you ever plan on taking a journey with your horse, knowing how to securely pack up and tie gear to your pack or riding saddle is an essential skill. Stan Walchuk, Jr. discusses Hitching the Pack Horse (page 37) in his article this month.

So sit back with a cup of hot cocoa or eggnog, and enjoy our final issue of 2008.
